Day 8 – March 17 – Driving South

Ok, today we had a vacation day and not so much a Trip day! We rolled into our cottage pretty late after a nice dinner at a touristy town under the shadow of a glacier. We did our own tourist thing and bought our commemorative coffee mugs. I’ve decided that when one of our travel mugs break then we have to go back to that country to get another! Fortunately we did not buy mugs in Easter Island…

We slept hard and had a leisurely breakfast of pb&j and instant coffee before we started our drive. We had about 6 1/2 hrs to go south via some of the most corkscrewy roads I’ve ever driven! The scenery was amazing, so even a day of just driving in New Zealand is better than a typical day at work.

Tonight is an early night since we hit the road with several hundred of our closest friends to head down to Milford Sound for our half day kayaking trip. Our lodging is pretty plush, lots of the national parks here have small cottage options which is perfect for a group of four!
