Day 3 – Caving

The morning was a little rushed as we packed up camp and headed out to the ferry over to Vancouver Island. We encountered some misleading road construction signs and had a 15 minute detour. Luckily Steve had planned ahead and we had reservations for the ferry which meant we could jump to the front of the line of traffic. Apparently tomorrow is Canada Day and loads of people are headed to the Island!

Obligatory photo from ferry.

After disembarking we headed to Horne Lake for our 12:30 caving tour. We didn’t have reservations for a campground and decided to swing in before the tour and see what was available. We snagged the last spot, and while it wasn’t the best for tent camping, it was better than sleeping in the parking lot! Horne Lake campground is small but is situated on a wonderful lake.

Our caving tour was through Horne Lake Caves and we did the 5 hour version that included a rappel down about *** feet! I was a little hesitant about the tour since Steve has drug me through lots of caves and this was our first touristy cave. I needn’t have worried, the tour delivered! We had 5 people and one guide. The pace was a lot slower than I’m used to, pretty sure Steve would have made it a 3 hour tour! The slower pace meant we got to take lots of photos and see the cave formations in detail. This cave was pristine when compared to the cave I’ve seen in Indiana.

After caving we hit the lake for a quick dip and then relaxed around camp until the mosquitos drove us into the tent.
