Iceland 2021 Day 15

07/28/2021 – Leaving

We woke up early enough to get the giant hockey bags packed with all the camping gear. These giant duffels have become somewhat essential to our travels when flying and camping are involved! Another nice breakfast at the Start Hostel and then over to the COVID test site. All though we were all fully vaccinated, to travel back to the US, we had to have proof of a negative test. A fun brain tickle later and we were all cleared to travel. The leaving day of an adventure is always sort of a let down. It’s hurry up and then wait, repeated for just about everything, with no fun adventure stuff at the end. The car rental return was easy, no extra charges!

Since there isn’t really anything interesting to write about on the final day, I’ll instead leave you with some travel to Iceland pointers in case you get the opportunity to go!

Travel Tips to Iceland 2021:

  • Get the highest lifted vehicle your budget can afford, especially if you want to drive any of the F roads that are open. The Jimney is a good option, as is the Duster. The Kia Sportage not so much, although doable with defensive driving on dry roads but not for water crossings. Some of these have pretty neat cartop tents on them now that would be great for solo or a couple.
  • Pack a soft side cooler and then hit the big grocery in Keflavik. You won’t find bags of ice, but you can buy some frozen veggies to use and then cook later for dinner.
  • Pay for the GAIA gps app before you fly in and make sure to download the maps you want. This allows you to know where you are and where your trail is even in airplane mode!
  • Use one of the ferry services out of Isafjödur to get over to the Hornstrandir.
  • Sensitive to light while sleeping? Pack an eye mask for summer camping.
