Day 15 – Sooke Potholes and back to the mainland

Now pros at breaking camp and packing up, we headed back to the car earlier than we had planned. We did discover that a mouse had gotten into the car and managed to gnaw into the bread bag. Hopefully it had gotten back out the same way! The plan for today was to hit the Sooke Potholes when it was sunny for some fresh cold water wading and relaxing. Since we had time to spare we tried out a Serious Coffee and man, that is really tasty! I had the London Fog, a tea latte, which has the potential to convert me from coffee to tea! After some caffeine we decided to wash the Jeep since the layer of gravel dust was thick and we didn’t want the rental company to charge us extra cleaning fees. Next stop Potholes! This is a cool formation caused by the swirling of water on the rocks, digging out deep areas. Steve had read that this park gets really busy so we parked in the first lot we came to and staked out a claim on a quiet beach. I didn’t realize that the true potholes were much farther upstream accessible from the paid parking lots and trail. We did drive up but didn’t have time to hike down and check them out since we had a ferry to catch. Here was where we encountered a snafu. On the way to Swartz Bay we found the only main road closed and traffic being re-routed. The short 40 mon drive turned into a 2 hour drive and we missed our ferry! Luckily the ferry attendant didn’t charge us more for the next one. Later we found out it was due to a brush fire along the main road. BC mainland is suffering under several large fires now but this one was caught and corralled quickly.

Where we should have gone!

Our final night in BC was once again spent in the Capilano RV park. While not the most glamorous location it does put us close to one more sight to see and the airpor for tomorrow.
